Day 136 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • As Sudan's economy continues to free fall, #SudanCoup authorities have tried all within their power to keep their operation bankrolled: raising bread, fuel and electricity prices, as well as healthcare fees.

  • These recent increases have had a disastrous impact on citizens: Medani Dental Hospital (a public facility) has been forced to limit operational hours due to lack of budget; according to its General Director, the hospital can no longer afford the electricity fees. In Khartoum, General Director of Ibrahim Malik Hospital Dr Ali Shakir refused to apply the fee hike, saying in his letter: "free healthcare is a universal right". In response, #SudanCoup authorities suspended him from his post. Outraged, doctors at Ibrahim Malik have been announcing their strike in protest of #SudanCoup authorities' decision.

  • The cash grab has reached desperate levels: #SudanCoup forces (army, RSF, police) raided the Khartoum Central Market today, presumably to evict unlicensed sellers (who are often also fined). But there are many reports that officers took the opportunity to also loot produce trucks and sellers, continuing the unbridled abuse of power by authorities.

  • The return of the Bashir regime forges on: #SudanCoup authorities ordered the reinstatement of 7 pro-NCP officials to the Ministry of Energy, previously dismissed by the Empowerment Removal Committee.
